What We Learned Building the Admin for a Shopify App

ARTICLE OVERVIEW
Boomerang Magic is a Shopify app, and we built its internal admin suite: the control centre the app's team uses to run the business behind the app. It covers recurring revenue and active installs, shop management, team roles and permissions, an email template editor, a billing engine and promo codes. The biggest lesson from the project wasn't technical. Shopify app founders spend almost all their time on the features merchants see, which makes sense, because that's what gets installs. But behind the scenes the team often runs the business from database queries, spreadsheets and the Shopify Partner dashboard. Simple questions like who installed this week, which shops are on which plan, or why a payment failed take a developer to answer.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
A good app admin answers the daily questions without engineering help. Revenue and installs at a glance: recurring revenue, new installs, uninstalls and plan changes, ideally with the reason a merchant left. Shop-level detail: every shop's plan, usage, billing history and support notes on one page. Team roles: support staff can see and help shops without being able to change billing or delete data. Editable communication: onboarding and billing emails the team can change without a deploy. And billing tools: plans, upgrades, failed-payment handling, promo codes and transaction reports. None of these features are exciting to build, but each one removes a recurring interruption for the developers, who can then spend their time on the product merchants pay for.

METHODOLOGY
Our advice to Shopify app founders is to build the admin early and grow it with the app. Start with the two or three questions your team asks most often and make those one click. Treat billing as its own module from the start, because Shopify billing, trials, plan changes and discounts get complicated quickly and are painful to retrofit. Log every important event, such as install, uninstall, plan change and failed charge, so reports can be built later without guessing. And give support staff their own role from day one.
